Originating from the western foothills of the Middle Atlas mountains, home of a number of Arabic tribes whose presence extends all the way towards the Atlantic coastland, this rug exemplifies once again a variation of the checkerboard theme. Two heart-shaped elements are overlaid on the substrate, the disruption of weaving rhythm causing a progressive change in scale of the pattern. The careful choice of yarn colours, needed in order to obtain the salt and pepper effect of the two motifs, contrast efficiently with the seemingly random chromatic sequence of ivory wool and coloured industrial fibres which characterises the backdrop.
