The Beni Mguild tribe resides in the mountainous region of the Moroccan Middle Atlas. Along with the Beni Ouarain, they represent the earliest Berber presence in the area and have the longest documented legacy.
Prosper Ricard’s “Corpus de Tapis Marocains,” published in 1926 during the French Protectorate, dedicates an entire volume to the carpets of the Middle Atlas. Ricard focuses in detail on the weavings of the Beni Mguild, distinguishing between the ivory ones with lozenge patterns (Ichdif) and the richly colored carpets with an all-over diamond grid (Tazerbit).
This example features a warm red background with a pattern in blue and light yellow, partially covered by the weaving. The ‘cancelled’ pattern is clearly visible from the back (see the image detail), making it highly desirable among Berber carpet collectors. Beni Mguild carpets are known for their dense weaving, which gives them a unique sturdy texture.
This authentic Moroccan tribal weaving showcases outstanding quality.
