This Sumak saddlebag face, one of our collection’s earliest and most archaic examples, shows a large central octagon containing a pair of emerald green affronting birds similar to eagles in flight. The ivories, both for the background and border, are randomly woven in wool and cotton, a peculiar feature I have never encountered before. It is an early and mysterious bag that predates most examples of this type.
