The rare bedding bags originating from the eastern Caucasian town of Baku are typically decorated by patterns taken from pile rugs, such as this very fine and complete example, displaying a perfect rendition of what Kerimov labelled as the afshan design. The border of polychrome diagonal stripes is also borrowed from the rug iconography, as we see it frame many examples from the Shirvan and Baku area. A finely worked example with top quality lustrous wool, certainly an item of great prestige that was luckily kept intact for well over a century.
