Two parallel blocks of red dominate the white background of this unusual Azilal rug. What are we looking at? The ancient standing stones found in the Palaeolithic temples of eastern Anatolia immediately come to mind, although the weaver was certainly unaware of their existence. Yet something must have moved her to decide to weave this motif other than a simple exercise in weaving. Interestingly she chose to use precious wool for both the background as well as the motifs, and blue synthetic fibres as accents.
