The intention of the weaver of this charming example was quite possibly that of creating a directional pattern reminiscent of a niche rug. Here the field is divided in three vertical sections, the centre being occupied by a simplified form of the ‘head and shoulders’ prayer design, which is also hinted at on the extreme left and right portions of the side compartments. The clever use of polychrome striations elicit and emphasise the more spiritual domains of the prayer rug, inviting us to delve with faith into the unknown.
