The checkerboard pattern appears in its many variations throughout the Moroccan weaving culture. Here we see a rendition distinguished by bold chromatic juxtapositions characteristic of the rugs originating from the eastern part of the country, towards the border with Algeria. The weavings of this arid, colourless region are typically endowed by a palette which seems to transcend any connection with what we are accustomed to. The daring colour contrasts seen on this example expresses at its best the free spirit of these rugs.
