The zoomorphic origin of this particular design can be seen in the pair of stylised dragons that flank the corners of the inner star octagon, as well as in the animal pelt motif containing the central axis. The pelt theme is continued in the corner spandrels, the latter having a scale-like effect in its contour. This specific typology originates from a group of very early Anatolian rugs decorated by an axis element surrounded by two pairs of stylised animals.
