Finely knotted with lustrous kurk wool, this Mohtashem workshop Kashan rug depicts the Archangel Gabriel with the Madonna and Child with an attendant, dressed in the style of the Qajar period near a river flowing with fish, surrounded by a sparse vegetation and embellished with black rabbits (symbolising the non-believers), a white rabbit and deers. The elaborate borders are composed of a series of interconnected cartouches containing nastaliq style inscriptions related to the scene. It is possible that this rug represents a commission by the local Armenian community intended for a specific donation.
