A very unusual Swedish pile rug with colour and design reminiscent of Beni Ouarain Berber rugs, suggesting that Moroccan carpets were influencing Scandinavian Modern design quite early on. Indeed Scandinavian designers such as Alvar Aalto were the first ones to collect Berber rugs and employ them in their interiors.

Here the pattern of black parallel lines on an ivory background is embellished by elaborately rendered plain weave ends in contrasting colours. The textural difference between the long shaggy pile and the crispy flat-woven ends testifies to the outstanding creativity and technical accomplishment of Swedish female weavers.
