Early Art Nouveau carpets display a decoration that is reminiscent of the late nineteenth century ‘Second Empire’ weavings of the Napoleon III period, yet with touches of innovation in certain details of the pattern. This Art Nouveau rug shows a marked contrast between the pastel floral pattern of the inner cartouche with respect to the whimsical ornamentation and palette of the spandrels.
