Rugs of this period were quite strongly influenced by the artistic avant-garde movements that were happening in Paris, as there was a strong interconnection between the Fine and the decorative arts. The artists who designed rugs, such as Ivan da Silva Bruhns, were closely associated with painters like Picasso and Braque who strongly influenced their work.
