A very finely woven antique Chinese rug woven in the Imperial workshops of Peking. Distinguished by an elegant pattern of scrolling lotus flowers on an indigo background, this type represents the highest quality of weaving originating from China during the last decades of the Qing Dynasty. In this period the designs were based on patterns which were characteristic of the earlier Qing period, which in turn derived from the Ming Dynasty. Here the lotus blossoms, the symbol of purity, are connected by leafy tendrils, creating a sense of harmony and balance. A masterpiece in every respect.
