Carpets such as this one were woven in China during the Art Deco period in order to satisfy the demand in the West for decorative rugs designed in the Art Deco taste. Here the Art Deco idiom is maintained by an asymmetric arrangement of three oversized polylobed devices, the design of which derives from 17th century Ningxia weavings. The medium blue background is also characteristic of earlier Chinese carpets.
