This Art Deco rug by Fernand Windels, who was born in Belgium, was a leading carpet designer and manufacturer active in France in the 1920s and 1930s. Prior to establishing his own workshop called ‘L’Industrie du Tapis’ in the Creuse region, he was the leading designer at the Manufacture Français de Tapis et de Couvertures. Although he is known for his highly abstract patterns such as this one, he also wove floral Art Deco carpets commissioned by decorators such as Jean Goulden. This carpet is monogrammed Fernand Windels (vfv) and is characterised by abstract geometric forms characteristic of the Art Deco period.
