Ivan Da Silva Bruhns was probably the greatest innovator in carpet design during the Art Deco period. His close association with Cubist period artists such as Picasso and Braque led him to develop what became his signature style, characterized by overlapping rectangular planes in contrasting colors embellished by a unit of six black parallel lines running across the composition in an asymmetrical fashion. This particular rug was inspired by an example commissioned by Eckart Muthesius, the architect who designed the notorious Art Deco palace belonging to the Maharaja of Indore.
