This lovely antique Yarkand carpet with pomegranates fascinates admirers of carpets from eastern Turkestan, better known as Samarkand. The perfect balance between the geometric design’s force and the curvilinear motifs’ graceful eloquence explains this fascination. The parallel rows of stylized pomegranate trees, symbols of fertility, distinguish this unusual grey ground example, woven during the glorious Art Deco years. Each tree sprouts from a small vase placed at the base of the composition. This area’s ancient motif has appeared on the rugs of the oases of Khotan and Yarkand since at least the 17th century.
