A rare and unusual rug, reminiscent of a contemporary painting, decorated by an apparently casual miscellany of polychrome wools. Examples of this type have always been sourced directly in China, indicating that this pattern was possibly very much in fashion among the Chinese in the early 20th century. The origin of this pattern is still unclear although some have pointed out the similarities with American rag rugs of the same period.
