This rare and unusual antique square Peking rug with abstract design is reminiscent of a contemporary painting and decorated by an apparently casual miscellany of polychrome wools. Examples of this type have always been sourced directly in China, indicating that this pattern was very much in fashion among the Chinese in the early 20th century. The origin of this pattern is still unclear, although some have pointed out the similarities with the American rag rugs of the same period.
