A fine Peking-type carpet was woven by a honeycomb arrangement of polychrome lozenges with an almost random colour distribution.
Carpets of this type represent an early 20th-century ‘Minimalist or Abstract’ style, which seems to characterise a cluster of Chinese weavings of the period, also seen on the simple forms and decoration of some ceramic vessels. Chinese Modernism extends itself to various media, ranging from furniture to objects, and is indicative of an adaptation of Chinese traditional forms to new colour ways and iconographies.
