A monumental Bakhshaish carpet, characterised by an unusual light blue background onto which is overlaid a large, central taupe-coloured cartouche, flanked at the corners by salmon pink quarter medallions. Both the field and the spandrels are peppered with a plethora of geometric motifs, some of which are characteristic of the work of the neighbouring Shahsavan tribes. Indeed the entire composition is distinguished by a primitive quality one associates with tribal rugs, rather than the more formal Persianate motifs we often see in the rugs from the Heriz region. A true masterpiece of Persian tribal and village textile art.
