This is a rare and relatively early example of a monochrome Tulu rug, distinguished by a completely open field embellished by almost calligraphic touches of natural brown wool. Tulus of this type are among the earliest extant and are distinguished by a larger format. These were used in the tent and provided thermal insulation during the nomadic cold winters. Early examples such as this one are coveted as true pieces of Minimalist nomadic art.
