Scholars have offered various interpretations of the motif’s origin found on this rug and others in its rare group. A striking similarity exists between this piece and one in Istanbul’s Turk ve Islam Eserleri Muzesi. This similarity allows us to define the design more precisely. It consists of two parallel rows of gul-type motifs, derived from the implosion of four yun-chien elements. Stylized cloudbands flank these motifs. Both design elements draw inspiration from ancient Chinese symbology.
The rug’s quality sets it apart as one of the finest Kurdish rugs from the Sivas area. Its extraordinarily silky wool catches the eye immediately. Brilliant colors radiate from the fabric, while an extremely fine weave demonstrates the weaver’s exceptional skill. These features combine to create a textile of remarkable beauty and craftsmanship.
