In this antique Kazak rug, the repeating hooked element seen here is related to the animal-tree motif, an ancient symbol at the origin of a good portion of the iconography seen on tribal rugs of different provenance. It’s curious how the weaver decided to skip the motif at the top of the central row, substituting it with a more delicate paisley element.
