This antique Ikat silk velvet panel is a very special one among the weavings of central Asia. Ikat textiles best express the quality and purity of colour and the magic of abstract forms. The rare examples woven in silk velvet were expensive, difficult to manufacture, and destined for high-ranking clients. Here we see quite an unusual design composed of three horizontally arranged purple abstract zig-zag motifs set against a glowing yellow background.
Conserved on a cotton backing and mounted on a wooden stretcher
