Weavers created Bessarabian kilims in the Russian regions of Ukraine and Moldavia. Workshops commissioned these flatweaves, which often had the necessary organization to produce carpets of sophisticated design and fine execution. By the 19th century, a few carpet workshops had already set up around St Petersburg.
The unique synthesis of folk art and courtly refinement gives Bessarabian kilims their magic. These flatweaves differ from western urban weavings in their less formal designs. In this example, the floral sprays of rose bouquets closely relate to the local and traditional vernacular. This elegant balance between the noble and the poor, grace and force, makes these flatweaves among the most sought-after decorative carpets.
The Russian aristocracy’s demand for Continental-style interiors prompted the creation of these kilims. The designs have a much less formal character compared to western urban weavings.
