An asymmetrical honeycomb arrangement of irregular diamonds forms the design of this vintage Beni Ouarain Berber rug. This creates an abstract network of lozenges, giving a three-dimensional impression. Natural undyed wool in mocha brown, mixed in two different proportions, produces the pattern. Towards the end, the weavers transition to a combination yielding a more contrasting pattern. Overall, this genuine old Beni Ouarain weaving exudes great elegance and boasts a wonderful patina.
Seventeen tribes make up the Beni Ouarain confederation, which inhabits the high mountain region of the northeastern Middle Atlas. Their rugs distinguish themselves from other Berber weavings because weavers create them exclusively with an ivory background and decorate them with abstract geometric motifs using undyed natural wool. Due to the high quality of materials, spontaneous designs, and strong ethnic-minimal feel, these carpets lead in contemporary interior design. Typically, Beni Ouarain carpets measure approximately 400 cm (13 feet) by 200 cm (6.5 feet). However, we rarely find them in sizes more adaptable to today’s Western interiors, as in this case.
