Silk Embroidered Textile with Angels, Grotesques and Fantastic Animals

Circa 1600
Sicily, Italy
47 cm x 36 cm
1'6" x 1'2"

A very rare, early Italian embroidery from Sicily very finely worked in emerald green silk on a gauze or linen background. It depicts a flamboyant pattern of grotesques alternated to angels flanking a pair of fantastic animals. The two-headed eagle motif in the border alternated to angels is reminiscent of coat of arms imagery.
