Born as a natural extension of the eponymous architecture studio founded in 2010 by Tommaso Calini and Alessandra Cervia, the brand is rooted in Milan but operates with a genuinely global outlook. Through an architectural lens, Aptitude Objects builds an ever-evolving ecosystem of products shaped by layering, variation, and ongoing transformation; each piece the result of rigorous research, multiple hands, and a careful selection of artisans who know how to translate ideas into matter.
Mise en abyme is a cinematic, pictorial and architectural device in which an image contains itself, or a variation of itself, potentially ad infinitum. It creates a fragment through which the viewer can metaphorically slip into an abyss, intuitively recognising the whole within a part.
Applied to architecture and design, Mise en abyme is not a literal mirroring but a process of material reflection. It is not about identical repetition, but about deviation, imperfection and displacement. The system reappears each time in a slightly altered state.
Aptitude Object's collection translates this principle across three interconnected levels.
On a material level, the same form exists in different substances. The design remains unchanged, yet the reality of the object shifts. Matter alters perception without modifying geometry.
On a constructive level, the project originates from a primary module that is repeated and aggregated. Each repetition generates a new condition. The system replicates but never reproduces itself identically.
On a conceptual level, the repetition is neither mechanical nor mathematical. It is instinctive and reflective. Error becomes value. Each recurrence introduces variation, and transformation becomes intrinsic to the process.
This logic is first expressed through the rugs, developed in collaboration with Alberto Levi Gallery. Each design is presented in two distinct material conditions. In wool-cashmere, the surface absorbs and softly reflects light, emphasising depth and tactility. In abacá, woven through spirals and structured fibres, the same geometry acquires a more architectural presence, transforming the surface into a micro architecture. The drawing does not change, yet its perceptual and spatial quality is radically redefined.
The other objects in the collection emerge from the same generative principle. Built through aggregation, layering and manual processes, they manifest a constructive act. Modular elements accumulate to form volumes that appear stable, yet retain subtle instability through surface variation and the visible trace of the hand.
Each piece reveals the process that shaped it, where gesture interrupts uniformity.
