When, at the turn of the millennium, flat-weaves of this type began to appear on the international market, we were all spell bound. What were we looking at? What was the source of these patterns? Indeed the publication that followed attempted at clarifying some of these key points. In ‘Undiscovered Minimalism’, Tanavoli (2011) suggests that the minimalist character we see here shows an adherence to Sufism, representing the mystical component of Islam, whose quest is that of expressing the spiritual purity in its simplest form. Geometric abstract patterned textiles already appear on Persian illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages. The ancient modernity of this group of Mazandaran kilims is essentially what sets them apart from the rest.
