Composed of square seating mats, this rare monastic runner still conserves traces of the original red logwood dye for the background. The weave is slightly coarser than usual and the wool has a feel which we normally associate with the weavings of Inner Mongolia. This type of runner is typically found in Tibet in fragmentary condition, of which we know a few examples in the literature. The exclusive use of light blue corroborates my theory of it being a signature colour for rugs commisioned for the Tibetan monasteries.
