Lion Rug

Dated 1955
Herat region, Northeast Caucasus
180 cm x 128 cm
5'10" x 4'2"

A truly unique rug depicting a huge lion dominating a green landscape populated by rabbits as well as by vultures, the latter nesting on a flowering tree. The extreme care in every detail of the pattern suggests that the weaver might have referred herself to a traditional Azerbaijani tale. The successful combination of colour, design and texture elect this rug to the highest ranks of Caucasian folk art.
