Dais cover with eight lotus flower medallions

ALG 19
Kangxi period (1662-1722)
Ningxia, Northern China
310 cm x 128 cm
10'2" x 4'2"

deacquisitioned many years ago from a small museum in midwest America, this carpet has the rather peculiar feature of being woven along the horizontal axis. The polylobal shape of the medallions is an indication of age and reminds us of the shape of the large cartouche medallions like the on the lion-dog fragment present in this exhibition. The format indicates that it was used to cover the raised platform dedicated to the reception of important guests, also known as the kang.
