This Art Deco cotton chequerboard dhurrie is a prime example of the traditional flat-woven cotton carpets known as dhurries, which were first mentioned in Mughal chronicles of the 15th century. Likely one of the earliest forms of floor covering, dhurries were created in various formats to suit different purposes, from bed covers to prayer mats. Most dhurries were produced in the northern region of Rajasthan, often in local jails. They were frequently commissioned for specific areas of the Maharaja’s palaces and are often of massive dimensions.

This unique piece features a large chequerboard pattern with alternating white and lilac squares, framed by a yellow and teal green Greek-fret border motif. The vibrant color combination creates a whimsical dhurrie with great character, capable of transforming a room into a space with a unique personality.
