A fine antique Shirvan rug, from the northeast Caucasus, distinguished by a directional all-over pattern of small shield-like elements. The honeycomb arrangement of this motif allows for a random distribution of colour, creating a pleasing visual effect. Caucasian rugs of this vintage have always been admired for the geometric character of their patterns, which are rendered almost abstract, coupled with a rich gamut of fully saturated natural dyes.
