An extremely fine and early Akstafa long rug, which is a specific type of Shirvan rug, distinguished by a sequence of star octagrams in alternating colours, set against a dark indigo blue background and flanked by pairs of large stylised peacocks, and surrounded by a profusion of stylised zoomorphic motifs. The white border is embellished by a sequence of polychrome, hooked cartouches, showing a palette that is characteristic of the earlier vintage for this highly coveted family of Caucasian rugs. The exceptionally good condition of this refined example, with its full, lustrous pile, allows us to fully enjoy the true beauty of an antique Caucasian rug at its best.
