A rare Tibetan meditation rug with a lacquer red background, embellished in black and showing two bracketed roundels each containing a stylisation of the lotus flower, symbol of purity, flanked in the corners by stylised butterflies and framed by a border of cloud bands. This pattern is characteristic of Chinese silk brocades of the Ming period, which typically adorn the interiors of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. Very finely knotted with extremely soft and glossy Tibetan highland wool.
