A finely woven Anatolian kilim originating from the Erzurum area in northeastern Anatolia, distinguished by a directional niche pattern, which is sometimes referred to as the prayer design. Contained within a rectangular reserve, the shape of the niche is such as to leave a generous space for the richly embellished spandrels. Both the interior of the niche as well as the spandrels enclose totemic-like motifs that are specific for this region of Anatolia. Kilims represent mankind’s earliest form of weaving, and are often the repository of an archaic iconography.
