35. L 79 Lattice design carpet Agra Northern India circa 1880 350 x 303 cm (11’6” x 9’11”) asymmetrically knotted wool pile open to the left on a cotton foundation A highly refined and elegant Agra carpet, woven on a rare emerald green background and framed by a widely spaced lemon yellow border. Agras represent the pinnacle of the decorative carpet market in that they embody the classicism of Mughal iconography with a palette that is much closer to Western sensibility. They represent the ideal synchretism of style, and for this reason they have been the first choice among interior designers since the nineteenth century. Together with the contemporaneous Ziegler carpets, Agras have always been the trademark for noble and timeless quality.
