Alg 1861 Carpet with animal and palmette pattern Northwest Persia circa 1800 320 x 250 cm (10’ 7” x 8’2”) symmetrically knotted wool pile on a wool foundation A unique carpet, starting with a row of sawtooth edged lozenges as seen on some northwest Persian flatweaves, immediately changing to horizontal rows of palmettes flanked by a pair of animals, strongly stylised such to resemble the strapwork arabesque pattern of the Safavid era. The wide border is embellished by an asymmetrically drawn vine sprouting white blossoms and, like the field pattern, it represents previously unrecorded design.
