| ASHA – Joanna Michalowicz, better known as Asha, is a young artist of Polish origin who is active in New York. After having studied the art of weaving in one of the most prestigious academies in Poland, Asha begins her career as a restorer of antique textiles, initially for the National Museum of Cracow and then for one of the most prestigious galleries in New York. It is indeed through this profound knowledge of textile structures that Asha conceives her carpets, permeated with magical tactile sensations and composed of yarns often made by combining wool with silk and hemp or linen, mimicking the changing colours of nature. The Asha collection is distinguished by a texture which is very similar to that of antique carpets, although the patterns are more typically inspired by elements of nature and by contemporary design. Her carpets truly stand out from the spectrum of contemporary weavings in that they fulfil the dual need for a rug with an antique feel that portrays a fresh, more modern iconography. |
